Heart & Stroke Research Foundation Awards
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO) and Toronto Dominion (TD) Bank Financial Group have partnered to provide Summer Medical Student Awards for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) since 2006.
In March 2008, Dr. Marco Di Buono, Director of Research at the HSFO said: « We are building research capacity in the North by keeping bright, young minds in the region. This will help us to meet our Mission of eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact for future generations of Northern Ontarians. It is only through effective partnerships like this, made possible in part through the support of TD Bank Financial Group, that we will meet the needs of the entire population of Ontario. »
This award competition is open to all second year NOSM medical students who have completed their Integrated Community Experience (ICE) placement. The idea is to have students returning to the communities over the summer months (June -July) to continue the research work from their ICE placement. To be eligible to receive the award, applicants must be working on a research project related to cardiovascular or cerebrovascular health under the supervision of a NOSM faculty member. The applicant must have the support of the community leadership in the rural and/or Aboriginal community within which the applicant’s placement will be situated.
The HSF/TD awards are remunerated at $6,000 (for the summer) with an additional $6,000 in travel funding.
