The Dr. Gilles Arcand Centre for Health Equity at NOSM University is committed to encouraging research that is responsive to community needs and priorities in Northern Ontario. Established in 2021, the Centre was born of an immutable conviction: that everyone, regardless of circumstance or geography, deserves the dignity of equal access to health-care practitioners who are culturally competent, understand the realities of living in the rural and remote North, and lead with compassion and integrity.

The Health Equity Postdoctoral Award will provide financial support to high-calibre academics doing scholarly work that is aligned with the CREATE Project (funded by a 7-year SSHRC Partnership Grant). The CREATE Project responds to growing calls for institutions to partner on complex societal problems and to be accountable to the populations, places, and people, they serve. By collecting and sharing best practices, scaling socially accountable research projects across local regions and settings, and building capacity for the ongoing application of socially accountable research, The CREATE Project seeks to study the practice of research itself – its methods, activities, collaborations, and networks.

Specifically, successful applicants are expected to make meaningful contributions towards a subset of the CREATE project objectives and benchmarks, encompassing the areas of:

Partnership Engagement and Evaluation Research: The successful applicant will support research that helps to generate and mobilize knowledge around socially accountable research, with a focus on developing and implementing a partnership evaluation framework.

Arts-Integrated Health Research: The successful applicant will support research that uses an arts-integrated approach to understand the structures, enablers, and barriers of socially accountable research across contexts, cultures, and communities.

Responsabilités

Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support the advancement of socially accountable and health equity-focused research
  • projects within the Dr. Gilles Arcand Centre for Health Equity.
  • Serve as a liaison for the Arcand Centre with communities, organizations and networks
  • Coordinate committee groups and working groups as needed
  • Co-author research publications and reports as needed.
  • Assist with the submission of funding applications.
  • Coordinate research teams and research subjects and/or volunteers, as appropriate to
  • specific study objectives and work scope.
  • Ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research activities, acts as an
  • administrative point of contact.
  • Coordinating the day-to-day activities and the carrying out of research protocols, as
  • appropriate to the position; may perform aspects of research protocol, as required, in
  • accordance with specified project objectives.
  • Work with research assistants and other trainees as needed to facilitate data collection
  • and analysis.
  • Monitor the progress of research activities; develop and maintain records of research
  • activities, and prepares reports
  • Lead knowledge translation activities and the development of knowledge tools
  • Work with partners to facilitate dialogue, promote collaboration and create
  • opportunities for future partnerships
  • Lead, facilitate, and participate in team meetings, working groups, and other research
  • related activities related to health equity and social accountability.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Éducation

  • A completed PhD from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation obtained in the last two years or be close to receiving their PhD degree or is required.

Connaissances, Compétences et Capacités

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience is required
  • Experience with a variety of research methods; large data sets, quantitative, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research designs
  • Familiarity with data storage and analysis systems considered an asset
  • Experience with program coordination and management; demonstrated skills in problem solving, planning/organization, personal motivation, project management
  • Proficiency in using a variety of office software, literature search engines, bibliographic software
  • Expertise in data communication software such as data visualization, publishing, and/or graphic design software
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • The Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations that apply to the work being performed

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
