The position profile below calls for the successful candidate to have a substantial knowledge of, and exposure to the issues faced by competency-based medical education, distributed medical education, to possess significant experience in the public health and academic sectors, to be self-motivated and self-directed, and to possess superior interpersonal, facilitation, communication, change management and problem-solving skills.

Reporting

In this collaborative position, the Competency-Based Medical Education Lead (CBME), Public Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM),  reports jointly to the PHPM Program Directors at NOSM University and Queen’s University for the 2024-25 academic year. The CBME Lead reports to the PHPM Program Director at NOSM University for subsequent years.

Responsabilités

Summary of Functions

  • Develops tools and processes to support CBD, including a curriculum map, EPA evaluations, policies related to CBD, case-based learning sessions, and rotation learning plans with goals and objectives
  • Provides support and guidance to the PHPM program director, faculty, and administrative staff in the implementation of CBD
  • Support the PHPM residency program(s) in adapting national curricula to local resources and contexts
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the transition to CBD, and specifically with the Royal College and Physicians Surgeons of Canada

Educational Responsibilities

  • Develop the overall CBD educational plan for the program(s) such that it meets the general and specific standards of accreditation
  • Oversees the work plan for CBD implementation and ongoing review
  • Leads CBD academic and clinical curricular design and change in collaboration with the Program Director(s), Curriculum Instructional Designer(s), and other faculty
  • Ensures a program of continuous programmatic review and improvement with respect to CBD implementation, including regularly reviewing program policies applicable to CBD and incorporating emerging needs identified through the annual review of program and rotation evaluations into CBD implementation
  • Develops an in depth understanding of CBD, EPAs, and approaches to assessment
  • Provides direction to the Competence Committee Chair to lead an effective assessment committee structure
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of the electronic assessment platform (e-portfolio) being used
  • Contribute to selection of educational experiences
  • Identify, advocate for, and plan for resources needed for CBD development and implementation
  • Support the orientation of new residents to CBD and the program
  • Supports the development and implementation of case-based learning
  • Actively participate in professional development in medical education
  • Regularly review and ensure compliance with specialty specific documents from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in relation to training requirements, and accreditation
  • Interpret and implement, with relevant stakeholders, CPSO policy as it applies to competency-based resident education

  • Queen’s PHPM Curriculum Sub-Committee member for the 2024-25 academic year

Qualifications

Éducation

  • A Public Health and Preventive Medicine Physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario, with certification
  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM University

Connaissances, Compétences et Capacités

  • In-depth knowledge of competency-based medical education, workplace assessments and appropriate feedback
  • Significant experience the health and academic sectors
  • Self-motivated and directed
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skills

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Three (3.0) days per month
