Campers who must travel to Sudbury or Thunder Bay to participate in CampMed are required to have a chaperone.

Open to Ontario residents only.

Transportation, accommodation and all other costs are the responsibility of the camper and their chaperone.

NOSM University has several CampMed funding opportunities available to support families who might not otherwise be able to afford the cost of attending CampMed.

This funding is in place to help campers and their families mitigate the cost of attending CampMed. This funding will not cover the entire cost of attending CampMed. Funding information is listed in the application; applicants can list individual needs for one or more of the funding opportunities available.

CampMed accepts applications from high school students who:

• Are in Grade 10 or Grade 11 as of June 2024 (have priority), students from other grades may also apply
• Live in Northern Ontario or other rural and remote parts of Canada
• Submit a completed application form with all required documentation by the application deadline

Hi everyone! My name is Jadyn Adams and I’m excited to be volunteering at CampMed this summer! I’m currently finishing my first year of medical school at NOSMU on the Thunder Bay campus. Prior to medical school, I completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and briefly worked as a psychiatric RN. Within medicine, I have strong interests in psychiatry (specifically forensics), endocrinology, reproductive health, and social medicine. Outside of school, I love to travel, read, and spend time with family and friends. I can’t wait to meet you all and share my passion for medicine!

Adele Austin
Hey there everyone! My name is Adele. I am thrilled to be joining you at CampMed and can’t wait to get to know all of you! Although I am originally from Cobourg, I definitely consider Sudbury as my home since attending Laurentian for my bachelor’s in nursing. Outside of my nursing career and studies, I enjoy spending time outdoors and mentoring children and youth in the child welfare system. Miranda Boudreau
Hi everyone! My name is Miranda Boudreau and I am so thrilled to be a medical student volunteer this year for CampMed! I am 25 years old, and was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario! I completed my Undergraduate Degree in Biomedical Biology at Laurentian University and my Master’s Degree in Aging & Health at Queen’s University. For fun, I enjoy spending my time outside such as running, hiking, riding my horse, camping and fishing! I am looking forward to meeting you all this summer!

Madyson Campbell
Hi everyone! My name is Madyson and I am a first year student at NOSM U on the West campus. I am from Thunder Bay, and I completed my BSc at the University of British Columbia in 2023. I am proudly Métis and currently serve as the Region 2 Representative on the Métis Nation of Ontario Youth Council. I am also the co-founder of the Thunder Bay Free Store, a youth-led outreach initiative providing essential goods to individuals in need in Thunder Bay. Additionally, I have been involved in several research projects related to healthcare services, substance use, and Indigenous health. Looking forward to a great week at CampMed!

Michaela Coccimiglio
Hello everyone! I am Michaela Coccimiglio, a first-year NOSM medical student studying in Thunder Bay. Before medical school, I completed my undergraduate degree in applied life sciences at Lakehead University, with a research focus in chemistry. In my free time, you will find me enjoying the summer weather at camp, baking in the kitchen, or spending time with my family and friends. I have always known that I wanted to go to medical school, and during high school, I was a CampMed camper, just like all of you.

Mireille Courchesne
Hi, my name is Mireille Courchesne. I am honored and excited to be volunteering for CampMed at NOSM on the Sudbury campus. A little bit about myself, I was born and raised in French River and completed my nursing diploma at Collège Boréal. I’ve been a nurse for 3 years and most of that time being spent in the Shirley and Jim Feilding Northeast Cancer Center in Sudbury delivering cancer care to populations all over Northeastern Ontario. I am currently working towards my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) through Nipissing University with less than a year left to go! I have a strong passion for advocating for my patients and practicing self-awareness. I love the outdoors and spend most of my time in the summers on the water, fall; hunting, winter; snowmobiling and spring making maple syrup! A fun fact about myself is that I was a volunteer firefighter in my community for a few years. My goal is pursuing medicine in the next few years and serving northern Ontario. I look forward to contributing my skills and dedication to the CampMed program and am eager to engage in meaningful experiences alongside my fellow volunteers and participants.

My research interests focus on child and adolescent mental health and access to care for Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario. Kayla Folz
Hello! My name is Kayla Folz, and I am a first-year medical student on the Sudbury campus. I was born and raised in Sudbury Ontario, and I have been lucky enough to begin my medical education in my hometown. Before medical school, I completed my undergraduate degree at Laurentian University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science, specializing in Kinesiology. I fell in love with medicine at the age of five while helping my dad recover from a serious illness. I knew at a very young age that this was the career path I was meant to take. I grew up in the gymnastics world and competed as a senior national gymnast, spending many years coaching. This experience fostered my love for working with children, which has inspired me to pursue a career in pediatrics. Just over two years ago, I broke my neck and spent months recovering, experiencing all aspects of the healthcare field. The healthcare practitioners I worked with went above and beyond to assist me in every aspect of my recovery, and I am thrilled to be able to use my first-hand experience to impact individuals’ lives the same way they did for me.

Hi everyone! My name is Hannah, and I’ll be one of the medical students for the Sudbury In-Person CampMed. I’m so excited to meet you all! I am from Wahnapitae First Nation and have spent the last year living in Sudbury. Prior to medical school I was a Registered Nurse for 8 years! I worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and in Sandy Lake First Nation as the Nurse in Charge. In my personal time you can catch me reading a book, hanging out with my German Shepard, and eating ice cream! Can’t wait to meet you all and to spend a week together in July!

Emma Harland
Hello! My name is Emma and I am currently a second year medical student at NOSM University. I am from Thunder Bay and recently graduated from Lakehead University with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Throughout my undergraduate degree, I worked in a variety of clinical settings including intensive care and outpatient oncology. During this time, I also was involved in teaching literacy in a remote community and providing health promotion workshops to local youth. As for hobbies, I enjoy playing soccer, running, coaching figure/power skating, and walking my dogs Archie and Stella. I’m looking forward to this year’s camp and being able to meet all of the new campers!

Hello! My name is Sarah and I was born and raised in BC I have been working as a paramedic for almost 5 years and I hope to go into medicine one day! I love spending time outdoors hiking and camping. A few years ago I hiked from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail! 5 months 2650 miles!

Alex Kowalski
Hi everyone! Bonjour à tous! My name is Alex and I am a third-year student at Laurentian University majoring in Nursing with a minor in Psychology. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I hope to further my education at NOSM and pursue a career in rural family medicine in Northern Ontario. Born and raised in Kapuskasing, Ontario, I take pride in my francophone roots. Currently, I’m gaining valuable experience at a family doctor’s office in Kapuskasing, where I serve as a student nurse managing my own patients. Additionally, I am also certified as a phlebotomist. Outside of studies and work, you can find me playing hockey, going to the gym, or baking a sweet treat. I am eager to get to know all of you and share my passion for medicine and healthcare with you!

Brittany Kube
Hello! My name is Brittany. I am currently a BScN student in the compressed nursing program at Lakehead University. Although I am not originally from Thunder Bay, I have called this beautiful city home for a few years! I love student life, and the most rewarding part for me has been getting involved in the student community and the greater community through the many volunteer opportunities that Lakehead and NOSM provide. When I am not at school, you can find me hiking the trails (the scenery here is fantastic!), gardening, baking, crafting, and dancing! No matter how hard things get, music helps me find my center. It’s all about balance! This summer, I am most looking forward to CampMed! We are going to have so much fun exploring medicine and the world of healthcare together!

Hello! My name is Ella Lachimea and I am going into my last year of the collaborative nursing program at Lakehead University. I was born and raised in Thunder Bay and have grown to appreciate the beautiful outdoors that Northwestern Ontario has to offer. Hi everyone! My name is Alexie, and I’ll be one of the medical students for the Sudbury CampMed. I’m so excited to meet and spend the week with all of you! I was a Registered Nurse in rural family medicine and a part-time professor in the French nursing program at Laurentian University prior to beginning my studies at NOSM University. My name is Madeleine, and I am a Master of Science student at Laurentian University studying quality of life and access to care for women living with complex medical conditions in Northern Ontario. I was born and raised in Sudbury, and I love spending time outdoors, camping, swimming, and making friendship bracelets all summer long. I spend my winters reading, learning to cook and bake, and spending time with my friends and community. I am very excited to participate as a volunteer in CampMed!

Kristina Levert
Hello! My name is Kristina and I am so excited to be a medical student volunteer for this year’s CampMed! I grew up in Sudbury and come the fall, I will be going into my second year at NOSM University! I completed my undergraduate studies in Biologie Biomédicale at Laurentian University before I began my journey into medicine. A fun fact about me is that I’m trilingual, speaking English, French and Croatian. Outside of class time, I love going to the gym, hiking with my golden retriever or traveling! This fall I will be entering my 2nd year of the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology program here at Laurentian University, and I hope to pursue a career in medicine after graduation. Hello! My name is Hannah and I am a second-year medical student on the Thunder Bay campus. I am originally from Thunder Bay, but had the privilege to attend Purdue University for my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry while playing NCAA Division I soccer in the Big 10 conference. I then completed a Masters of Public Health at Queen’s University before coming to NOSM! I love all things outdoors, post-run café stops, and own enough plants to fill a small greenhouse.

Hello! Bonjour! My name is Moira, and I just completed my first year of Nursing at Lakehead University. Throughout my first year of university, I gained valuable insight and hands-on training. I participated in CampMed twice myself, and found it incredibly rewarding. I am eager to pursue a career in healthcare in the coming years.Volunteering is a significant part of my identity, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to patient care at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital every week. Hello/Bonjour! My name is Emma, and I am a first-year medical student at NOSM U. I was born and raised in Huntsville, Ontario. English is my first language, and I am a Francophile. I am an avid runner and I enjoy many outdoor activities. I have a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree. I have fond memories of my NOSM U CampMed experience when I was in high school and I am looking forward to giving back to the community as a NOSM U CampMed leader this year.

When I am not in school, I love to spend time on the lake with my friends here in Sudbury, and go camping with my family. Hello! My name is Hunter, I am a second year nursing student at Lakehead University within the collaborative stream. I’m born and raised locally (Thunder Bay) and am currently employed as a PSW with St. Joseph’s Hospital working with post-stroke & brain-injury rehabilitation clients. When I’m not studying or working I’m typically assisting with nursing research at the TBRHSC, volunteering, downhill skiing, or fishing. I was a previous CampMed participant in 2019 and am excited to return this time as an instructor!

Hello everyone! My name is Parmin and I’m one of the Thunder Bay CampMed volunteers this year. I recently completed my undergraduate studies in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University. I’m passionate about neuroscience and equity centred research, and had the opportunity to pursue these interests in my undergraduate research on visuo-spatial performance of English as Second Language (ESL) students. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, photography, and learning new languages. I’m super excited to meet all of you this summer!

Hello, my name is Pierson Rasmussen. I am going into my third year of Nursing at Lakehead University. I have lived in Thunder Bay my whole life and am thankful to have grown up in a city surrounded by nature and Lake Superior. Being close to nature, I enjoy spending time outside while hiking, fishing, golfing, and swimming at camp. I have always had a passion for helping others which inspired me to start my nursing journey at Lakehead University. The Nursing program has enabled me to embark on my journey in the healthcare sector while still enjoying the activities I love in Thunder Bay.

Hello everyone! My name is Alexandra, and I’m excited to be back at CampMed this summer! I am a first-year medical student at NOSM U on the Sudbury Campus. I live in Huntsville, Ontario, and recently graduated from the University of Toronto, where I completed a Master of Teaching. Before that, I completed an Honours Specialization in Kinesiology from Western University. My master’s research focused on culturally relevant mental health education to improve Northern rural youth outcomes. Before attending NOSM U, I loved being a teacher and making learning exciting for my students, which fuels my passion for health and education. I can’t wait to bring that energy and enthusiasm to CampMed this summer. In my free time, you can find me jogging, spending time outdoors with family and friends, painting, teaching at my local elementary school, and baking. Félix Tubin
Hi! My name’s Félix and I’m currently a 1st year medical student on the Sudbury Campus at NOSM U. I grew up in Sudbury and just recently finished my undergrad in Biologie Biomédicale at Laurentian University. Outside of school I enjoy playing tennis, basketball, going for runs, or catching up on recent movies/tv shows! I’m looking forward to CampMed this summer for the opportunity to work with the other volunteers to create a fun learning environment for the campers. Most of all, I’m excited to meet all the campers that’ll be participating, and hopefully pass on a lot of the cool things I’ve learned this past year. Thrishala Wijetunga
Hello, My name is Thrishala! I have a unique personality and am an award-winning musician, who was born and raised in Sri Lanka before moving to Canada in January 2023. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences (hons) from the University of Wolverhampton (UK) and my master’s in Counselling Psychology from Girne American University. I am a certified classical vocalist from the Trinity College of Music in London, and am also an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer. I was a professional voiceover artist from a young age and an A-Grade certified singer by Sri Lanka Radio Corporation. I was the female lead singer (for 9 years) for the musical band “Sohan and X periments”, which has been in the industry for over 4 decades. I have performed for diverse audiences on international platforms in Australia, Canada, Qatar, Kenya and more!

I have volunteered in a variety of medical camps, including rural health clinics, eye exam clinics, suicide prevention centers, and child mental health centers. My experience also includes managing a variety of fundraisers around Sri Lanka. I got married in 2022 and moved to Northern Ontario. While being employed as an Assistant Pharmacist, I have a strong desire to pursue a career in medicine in the future.

Tessa Zuck
Hello, I’m Tessa Zuck, and I am thrilled to be a part of the educational journey here at CampMed! I am currently studying Behavioural Neuroscience at Laurentian University and in the fall I will be entering my fourth year of the Honours Bachelor of Science program. I am excited about the opportunity to apply to Medical School and continue my academics within the field of Health. My passions lie in Neurology and Family Medicine, where I hope to make a meaningful impact. As a proud francophone from Sudbury, I embrace the diverse culture and natural beauty of Northern Ontario. Beyond academics, I find joy in fishing, camping, and hiking, immersing myself in the great outdoors. My background as a competitive dancer has instilled in me discipline and perseverance, traits I carry into all aspects of life. Whether exploring the wilderness, diving into school work or enjoying time with friends and family, I believe in a balanced approach to learning and living.

CampMed is founded on four pillars of learning. From top left and going clock wise, the icons in the new branding represent interprofessionalism, leadership, culture, and clinical skills—the knowledge and skills that participants gain from attending CampMed.

Interprofessional

Participants attending CampMed learn the importance of interprofessionalism in health-care settings by learning about various health careers and how those professionals work together to ensure the well-being and health of patients. The majority of the interprofessional learning at CampMed is provided by the health-care professionals who participate in the career fair as well as their mentors who are the NOSM’s students and undergraduate student volunteers from Northern Ontario.

Leadership

Throughout the week, the CampMed participants are provided with opportunities to observe the leadership skills of their mentors to build on their own leadership skills set as they are placed in situations that give them a safe setting to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to lead.

Cultural

At CampMed, participants will learn about Francophone and Indigenous health and culture in ways that will broaden their understanding of health needs of Northern Ontario. In simple terms they learn what it means to be a socially accountable health professional. These cultural competencies are woven throughout the week-long curriculum.

Clinical Skills

CampMed offers participants a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience by learning medical and health sciences clinical skills, such as casting, inserting an NG tube, suturing, etc.
