Registration for the Virtual CampMed 2021 live workshops is now closed.

Live workshops will be scheduled from July 12 – July 23, 2021, with two (2) to three (3) workshops taking place each day.

Our aim is for this experience to provide mentorship and leadership opportunities for high school students from all of Northern Ontario.

Donations to CampMed

NOSM has decided to deliver CampMed 2021 virtually again this summer as it was a huge success last year with record-high participation throughout Northern Ontario. This year, we have decided to again waive registration fees to allow all Northern Ontario high school students the opportunity to partake due to the virtual component. However, there are still many costs associated with CampMed this year, including numerous prizes and prize packs, workshop kits, supplies and other event fees.

CampMed has been a successful pathway to medicine at NOSM:

• 674 Total Campers – 23 who have since been admitted to NOSM
• 75 University student volunteers since 2016 – 10 who have since been admitted to NOSM
• 167 Indigenous Campers
• 238 Francophone Campers
• 245 Campers from over 48 different communities in Northern Ontario

NOTE: The above statistics are based on the available data for the in-person CampMed from 2006-2019.

The live and pre-recorded online workshops will run from July 12-23, 2021, with multiple workshops being held daily. Workshop presenters include groups of both NOSM medical students and university students. Special workshops delivered by other health care professionals will also be available!

We hope that you will consider contributing to this important work of inspiring the youth of Northern Ontario to see themselves as the health care professionals of our tomorrow.

Indigenous Medicine
Monday, July 12, 2021 | 1:00 – 3:00 PM EST

This workshop will begin with a Medicine Walk in the community with Brandon. The linking of Traditional Medicine that was discussed in the walk with Western Medicine will be demonstrated. The workshop will end with an interactive Kahoots game that will encompass the knowledge gained in the workshop. There is a limit of 70 spots available for this workshop.

Can You Diagnose the Patient?
Monday, July 12, 2021 | 6:00 – 8:00 PM EST

Channel your inner Dr. Grey with this interactive, case-based anatomy session! Participants will rotate through virtual breakout rooms in order to learn about different anatomical systems. The workshop will end with participants putting this new knowledge to the test by working through patient presentations to find the medical diagnoses. There is a limit of 45 spots available for this workshop.

Healthcare Delivery in the North vs. the South
Tuesday, July 13, 2021 | 9:00 – 11:00 AM EST

Join us for an informative discussion about healthcare delivery! The similarities and differences between providing healthcare in Northern isolated communities versus larger urban areas will be illustrated and contrasted. Unique case-studies/scenarios will be discussed, along with pros and cons, and what these would look like in practice will be demonstrated. The workshop will end with a question period. There is a limit of 70 spots available for this workshop.

Wellness Session: Foot Soak with Mindfulness Meditation
Tuesday, July 13, 2021 | 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM EST

Come join us for a warm foot soak as we tune into the Netflix series “Headspace Guide to Meditation”. This is a great way to relax and unwind after a long year of dealing with the pandemic. Participants can use warm water and add any kind of bubble bath or Epsom salts they may have at home! There is a limit of 70 spots for this workshop.

Suturing Skills
Tuesday, July 13, 2021 | 6:00 – 8:00 PM EST

This workshop will focus on learning how to suture wounds! Do not worry you have never used a needle and thread before – you’ll learn it all during this workshop! Participants will watch a brief tutorial on how to suture with Dr. Owen Prowse, and then will be able to practice with guidance from medical students Brooke and Nada. Participants will receive their very own suture kits to be able to practice independently during the workshop. There is a limit of 50 spots for this workshop.

Wellness Session: Having Fun with Stress
Wednesday, July 14, 2021 | 4:30 – 5:30 PM EST

Fun, laughter, and connections are very important your mental health! During this workshop, participants will play virtual games, complete activities, and socialize with other participants and the CampMed volunteers. Student and volunteer discussions will take place in different breakout rooms, and each breakout room will offer activities and/or games associated with stress management. This workshop has a limit of 45 spots.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI): Solve the Crime
Wednesday, July 14, 2021 | 6:00 – 8:00 PM EST

Week 1: Participants will be visually introduced to a crime scene at the beginning of the workshop. Following the introduction, participants will be divided into three (3) breakout rooms, each containing groups of six (6) participants to work through the case with a volunteer. Each breakout room will contain clues and evidence as to how the murder was committed. Once each group has passed through each of the three (3) breakout rooms, they will connect to discuss how they believe the murder was committed. At the end of the Week 1 Workshop, participants will be given a profile of three (3) possible suspects, whom they will interrogate the following week.

Week 2: Participants will begin the workshop by formulating an interrogation strategy within their group. Afterwards, they will each work through three (3) different breakout rooms, each containing one of the murder suspects. Once each group has interrogated all of the suspects, they will discuss their findings and identify who they believe is the murderer. Once each group has identified their most plausible suspect, they will be given a picture of the situation and an in-depth look at the facts of the crime.

This workshop has a limit of 18 spots.

Simulated Patient Interviews (Bilingual) | Entretiens avec des patients simulés (bilingue)

This interactive, bilingual workshop will teach you how to take a patient history in either French or English and learn about bedside manner. Participants will work in groups of two (2) to interview patients about their medical and social histories with the help of our facilitators. Learn the fundamental skills of finding a diagnosis and working with patients online. Participants can choose an active role as a simulation interviewer (max. 24 spots) or an observer role in the viewing gallery (max. 26 spots).

The ABC’s of Medicine (Bilingual) | Les ABC de la médecine (bilingue)

In this bilingual workshop, learn medical acronyms and shorthand used in emergency situations both in and out of the hospital. How do hospitals decide who is seen first in the emergency department? This wellness workshop focuses on the importance of taking a step back during stressful situations, such as studying for exams. Indigenous Determinants of Health
Monday, July 19, 2021 | 1:00 – 2:15 PM EST

This workshop will begin with an informational session with Dr. Brenda Restoule. Dr. Restoule is a registered clinical psychologist from Dokis First Nation. She will cover water accessibility, mental, spiritual, and physical health. Various social determinants of health will be covered, such as housing and food insecurity, geographical isolation, income, employment, and education. A Social Determinants of Health game will also be incorporated. This workshop has a limit of 70 spots.

Bias in Medicine
Monday, July 19, 2021 | 6:00 – 8:00 PM EST

Join the NOSMSC Equity and Inclusion Committee in discussing bias in medicine affecting marginalized patients across Canada. The impacts of implicit bias in healthcare as it pertains to racialized individuals, the LGBTQ2S+ community, weight bias, and individuals living with visible and invisible disability will be examined and discussed. The workshop will end with a Q&A session for open discussion with participants.

Trauma Injuries

What comes to mind when you think of the most devastating sports-related injuries? In this workshop, participants will be challenged to diagnose some of the most famous cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and neurological injuries in the history of athletics. Participants will analyze video clips and X-rays and collaborate with their peers to propose a diagnosis and treatment for these catastrophic injuries! This workshop has a limit of 70 spots.

Adriane Bruni
Hello! My name is Adriane Bruni and I grew up in the city of Sault Ste. Marie while loving anything outdoors, athletics, and science related. I attended Laurentian University where I completed a B.Sc. with a specialization in Kinesiology and a Graduate Diploma of Kinesiology from Lakehead University allowing me to become a registered Kinesiologist following my degrees. Prior to NOSM, I completed a year of my master’s degree at Laurentian University in Interdisciplinary Health with a focus on Indigenous youth mental health. Growing up I always knew I wanted to pursue a career as a physician in rural communities and am so happy to be at NOSM where I am able to attain that goal. My current career interests are in pediatrics and emergency care. I am very excited to meet everyone and learn about what health means to each of you and share all that NOSM has to offer 🙂

Nada Abdel-Dayem
Hi! My name is Nada Abdel-Dayem, and I am a first year medical student at NOSM. Before coming to NOSM I had just finished my B.Sc. in Nursing. I have lived in Sudbury for most of my life, and am a Northerner through and through! I love being outdoors, and spend lots of time hiking, paddle boarding, swimming, cross-country skiing, and just soaking up as much sun as I can! I also am an avid reader (always love a good book recommendation) and cook. I’m really looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Laura Deschamps
Hi, my name is Laura, and I am a Year 1 Francophone NOSM student from Thunder Bay. I completed my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at Lakehead University in 2020 before being accepted at NOSM. I hope to one day practice as a Family Physician and Sports Medicine Physician in the Thunder Bay area. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time outdoors and playing sports like hockey, volleyball and tennis.

Megan Duhamel
Hi, my name is Megan Duhamel and I am a first year medical student at NOSM. I completed my undergrad in Nursing (French) at Laurentian University in 2019, and have been working as a registered nurse on Manitoulin Island for the past 2 years. I love the outdoors, hiking, running, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. I am very excited to be a volunteer for CampMed, as I myself was a camper when I was in high school. I look forward to meeting you all!

Hi, I’m Martine, a first year medical student here at NOSM. I did my undergraduate degree in Health Sciences in French at the University of Ottawa and am very excited to be back up North! In my spare time, I love running, hiking and pretty much anything else outdoors!

Ericha Hendel
Hi! My name is Ericha and I am a first-year medical student at NOSM on the East campus. I was born and raised in Sudbury and just completed my undergraduate degree at Laurentian University in Études de l’environnement and Philosophie in May of 2020. I’m interested in emergency medicine and surgery but outside of school, I like anything to do with the outdoors and sports. I participated in CampMed while in high school and absolutely loved the experience, so I can’t wait to meet you all this summer!

Hi, my name is Daniel Lamoureux and I’m a first year medical student. I’m from Sudbury but I’m currently doing my schooling at the Thunder Bay campus. I wanted to help out with CampMed because I had an amazing time attending as a camper in high school! I hope you have an amazing time as well!

Shannon Little
Hello, my name is Shannon Little and I grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, although my family is originally from Red Lake, which means I have spent most of my summers exploring Northern Ontario throughout the 20 hour drive. I completed my B.Sc in Biology at Laurentian University before completing my Masters degree in Biology, focusing on antibacterial drug developments from natural sources. My career goal is to fill a need within Northern Ontario by entering a generalist field so that I can be adequately prepared to practice across the province and support rural communities that have a need for closer access to specialist care.

Alexandrea Macey
Hi there! My name is Alexandrea, and I am a first-year student at NOSM. I was born and raised in Thunder Bay. I completed my degree in Biology with a concentration in Neuroscience at Lakehead University prior to entering medical school. In my free time, I enjoy exploring the area of Thunder Bay by hiking and camping. I have a particular interest in mental health and addiction medicine. I look forward to meeting everyone throughout CampMed 2021!

My name is Anthony, and I am a first year medical student at NOSM. Prior to medical school I worked as a Registered Nurse in the Yukon. I am originally from Thunder Bay and I love to do anything outside!

Brooke Raycraft
My name is Brooke Raycraft, and I am a medical student at NOSM in Thunder Bay going into my fourth and final year! I am originally from Bracebridge, ON. I did my university degree in Health Sciences at Laurier and then did a Master’s degree in Chemistry at Western University. After completing my degrees, I worked for two years waitressing and as a Quality Control Technician in the lab at a craft brewery. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, golfing, gardening, and hitting the gym! My future career goal is to become a rural family physician with advanced skills in mental health and addictions.

Daseul (Dee) Shin
Hi everyone! My name is Dee. I am a 2nd-year medical student on the West Campus in Thunder Bay.
Until moving to Thunder Bay to complete my undergraduate degree, I lived in many different cities across Canada. I love to travel outside of school, although COVID has put a damper on my travelling plans! I am very excited to be a part of this year’s Camp Med and am looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi, my name is Kalem and I’m a fourth-year Forensic Science and Biology student at Laurentian University. This will be my first time volunteering with CampMed and I’m excited to hopefully share some of the fascinating stuff I’ve had the chance to learn in my program. Roxanne Boodhoo
My name is Roxanne Boodhoo, originally from Vaughan Ontario, but currently residing in Sudbury where I have completed my Specialized Honours in Psychology at Laurentian University. Presently, I am a graduate research student and teaching assistant in my second year in the MSc. Biology program at Laurentian University. I have a strong interest and love when it comes to medicine as well as a passion for volunteering, community involvement, healthcare, ethics, and in mental health. I am extremely excited about CampMed 2021 this year and working with the other volunteers in this journey through the virtual-camp platform. I feel especially excited to be connecting and participating with younger students who have an interest in entering the healthcare field, and I hope to connect and share my own personal experiences and knowledge with my colleagues and campers.

Aanii! Hello! My name is Emily Camillo and I’m from Massey, Ontario. I’m currently in my second year of Nursing at Western University and I hope to attend medical school after graduating. In the future my plan is to work within remote Indigenous communities, such as my family’s home community of Moose Cree First Nation to provide culturally safe healthcare to Indigenous patients.

Madyson Campbell
Hi, my name is Madyson and I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I am currently in my second year of my Bachelor of Science degree at the University of British Columbia, and I am majoring in Psychology. After graduation, I plan to go to medical school and pursue a career as a psychiatrist. Outside of school, I am the Region 2 Representative on the Métis Nation of Ontario Youth Council and am involved in a variety of extracurricular activities on campus.

Bronwyn Fryer
Hi everyone, my name is Bronwyn! I am an Applied Life Sciences Student with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences and will be entering my fourth year at Lakehead University this fall. I grew up in a small town in Southern Ontario and was drawn to Thunder Bay and Lakehead University for its community feel. In my free time, I can be found boating, scuba diving, playing soccer, or learning something new on guitar. Upon completion of my undergrad, I hope to pursue a career in medicine and then work as an Emergency Physician in rural Ontario. This stems from an exceptional high school co-op experience, ongoing clinical experiences, and my love for learning the complexities and pathologies of the human body. I look forward to spending my summer sharing my passion for medicine through CampMed!

Patrick Gagnon
Hello! My name is Patrick Gagnon, and I grew up in Sudbury, Ontario. I am currently finishing the last year of my Bachelor’s degree in the French Sports Pyschology program at Laurentian University. In the near future, I’m hoping to study at NOSM. I love being active and playing sports. I was a goalie for 10 years in hockey, and I love playing soccer. I love to cook and try to do it as much as I can!

Lauren Hook
My name is Lauren, and I’m a Master of Public Health student, a lover of the outdoors, and a first-time CampMed volunteer! My passion for health, paired with my love for nature, has led me to take an interest in environmental public health and how the changing climate shapes our wellbeing. Jamie Irish
Hello! My name is Jamie Irish, and I am starting my third year in the Medical Sciences program at Brock University. I am also in Brock’s co-curricular Med Plus program, which is for students who intend to pursue a career in health care. I hope to pursue a career in medicine after my undergraduate degree, and a special interest of mine is endocrinology and cancer care! I can’t wait to be a part of the CampMed team this summer!

Danielle Labrosse
My name is Danielle Labrosse and I am currently enrolled in the Health Promotion program at Laurentian University. Throughout this program I have learned the importance of offering equitable health care and aspire to pursue a career where I am able to use what I have learned to help shrink the equity gap. On top of my studies I work at Science North, which is the local science centre here in Sudbury. I get to use my passion for chemistry and biology to educate the community on new, up-to-date science. Plus, at work I get to carry cute small animals in my lab coat to show the visitors!

Nicholas Lambert
My name is Nicholas Lambert and I am presently entering my third year of nursing at Laurentian University. I am from Elliot Lake, a small town approximately two hours west of Sudbury. My favourite hobby is competing in triathlons, a sport which I have actively engaged in for the past 10 years. Additional hobbies include ice fishing, kayaking, and essentially any other activity that occurs outdoors. During the school year, I am a member of Laurentian’s Cross-Country Running team. I’m also a campus-coach and peer-mentor for new incoming students. I am very excited to be a volunteer CampMed counsellor this summer and I look forward to engaging in meaningful and educational experiences with campers!

Mon nom est Nicholas Lambert et je vais bientôt commencer ma troisième année d’étude à l’Université Laurentienne. Je suis d’ Elliot Lake, une petite ville d’environ deux heures à l’ouest de Sudbury. Mon passe-temps favori est de participer aux triathlons. Autres passe-temps comprennent faire de la pêche sur glace, du kayak et n’importe quelle autre activitée dehors. Durant l’année scolaire, je suis un membre de l’équipe de course de fond à Laurentienne et je suis aussi un entraîneur de première année pour les nouveaux élèves à Laurentienne. Hi, my name is Lisa and I am currently a graduate student studying kinesiology and health sciences, with a focus on vision research. I am passionate about peer mentorship, knowledge translation, and mental wellness. In my free time I love to crochet/knit and spend time outdoors, on the water.

My name is Félix Lavigne and I am a fourth year student at Laurentian University in the Biomedical Biology program. I am originally from New Liskeard, Ontario but moved to Sudbury for my studies. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you during Virtual CampMed 2021!

My name is Amy Lefebvre and I am from the small town of Timmins, Ontario. This year, I was able to complete my first year as a science student at Queens University. I love to learn about Biology and Psychology. Pathogens are a source of interest to me, as is the study of endocrinology. I like to cook and read to pass the time. I am also very active, and enjoy swimming, dancing, and golfing. Looking forward to meeting all of you virtually!

Hello everyone, my name is Grant. I am from Atikokan (Northwestern Ontario), and I am currently a 4th year student studying Biology at the University of Manitoba. I have many interests and hobbies including: being in the outdoors, sports (basketball, volleyball, Nordic skiing), and most important, spending time with my family. My name is Hannah Morningstar, however my Anishnaabe name given to me can be roughly translated to Spring. My family and I are Elk Clan, and are from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek. I am currently in my second year of Biology (Specialized) at Algoma University, and fitting in as many Anishinaabemowin courses as I can. I hope to pursue a field where I can weave traditional science with western science accordingly.

Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Novello, a Sault Ste Marie native who enjoys science, country music, and the outdoors. I completed my Bachelor of Medical Science (BMSc) and Master of Science (MSc) in Physiology and Pharmacology at Western University, and am a current dental student at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. Claire Poulin
Hi there, my name is Claire and I am so thrilled to volunteer with NOSM CampMed again this summer! I was part of the original team last year to make the switch to providing CampMed online to our participants, and I have many great ideas to bring forth this year. I can’t wait to bring together a fun and experiential camp! I am originally from Atikokan, Ontario, but I am now in my third year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Ottawa. I am really enjoying my Biomedical Sciences degree, but when I’m not studying you can find me out on a run, with my nose in a book, or volunteering in my community! The two (2) part time jobs I hold during my studies are both focused around supporting Northern and remote youth (with the Let’s Talk Science organization and Duke of Edinburgh International Award). Rylee Restoule
My name is Rylee Restoule and I’m a second year student at Laurentian University. I’m completing a major in Health Promotion as well as a minor in Indigenous Studies. I’m Francophone and Ojibwe from Dokis First Nation. I was raised in Sturgeon Falls, and moved to Sudbury in 2019 when I started studying here! I enjoy working out and jogging, spending time with my cat, and cooking. I spend lots of time volunteering at Health Sciences North & at the Canadian Blood Services Plasma Donation Center. I’m planning on pursuing higher education within the medical field, so I’m very excited to volunteer for Virtual CampMed 2021!

Alexandra Santos
My name is Alexandra Santos, and I am a student at the University of Western Ontario, where I am pursuing studies in Kinesiology, after graduating last year with an Honours Specialization in Kinesiology. I was born in Toronto, ON and moved to Huntsville, ON four (4) years ago where I intend to pursue my goal of becoming a physician in Northern Ontario. In addition to my studies, I am passionate about mentoring students, which is what led me to spend the last four (4) years volunteering at my university as both a student orientation leader for first-year undergraduate students, and as a learning mentor for the Faculty of Health Sciences. This passion ultimately led me to volunteer with CampMed this summer, where I am looking forward to getting to know all of you! When I am not studying or volunteering, I love to figure skate, jog, paint, and spend time with my family.

My name is Katrina Thai and I am an Honours Science student with Conditional Admission to Pharmacy (CAP) at the University of Waterloo. I’ve lived in Northern Ontario my whole life and am super passionate about health sciences!

Chad Tremblay
Hello, my name is Chad Tremblay! I was born and raised in North Bay. I completed my nursing undergrad at Nipissing University in North Bay. I am a registered nurse on a remote Indigenous reserve in northern Saskatchewan and work in primary care up north. I thoroughly enjoy cycling (all of kinds!) and the great outdoors that Northern Ontario has to offer. I have interests in emergency/critical care, remote healthcare delivery, and relaxing with friends back home. A fun fact about me: I have an identical twin brother named Cory! I look forward to meeting and working with you all. Cheers!

Disal Wickramasinghe
Hello everyone, my name is Disal Wickramasinghe. I am a recent graduate of the B.Sc. in Radiation Therapy program at Laurentian University, and I am currently pursuing my M.Sc. in Interdisciplinary Health. One of my future goals is to continue further education within the medical field. I am originally from Sri Lanka, and my family and I immigrated to Canada back in 2005. The most significant achievement in my life was when I learned to speak English in a short amount of time after coming to Canada without any prior knowledge. My interests include sports, volunteering, and travelling. Two interesting facts about me are that I have a second-degree blackbelt in karate and an American Eskimo puppy named Niko.

CampMed is founded on four pillars of learning. From top left and going clock wise, the icons in the new branding represent interprofessionalism, leadership, culture, and clinical skills—the knowledge and skills that participants gain from attending CampMed.

Interprofessional

Participants attending CampMed learn the importance of interprofessionalism in health-care settings by learning about various health careers and how those professionals work together to ensure the well-being and health of patients. The majority of the interprofessional learning at CampMed is provided by the health-care professionals who participate in the career fair as well as their mentors who are the NOSM’s students and undergraduate student volunteers from Northern Ontario.

Leadership

Throughout the week, the CampMed participants are provided with opportunities to observe the leadership skills of their mentors to build on their own leadership skills set as they are placed in situations that give them a safe setting to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to lead.

Cultural

At CampMed, participants will learn about Francophone and Indigenous health and culture in ways that will broaden their understanding of health needs of Northern Ontario. In simple terms they learn what it means to be a socially accountable health professional. These cultural competencies are woven throughout the week-long curriculum.

Clinical Skills

CampMed offers participants a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience by learning medical and health sciences clinical skills, such as casting, inserting an NG tube, suturing, etc.
