Length of training: one (1) year
NOSM University’s Family Medicine Enhanced Skills Training in Anesthesia Program prepares family physicians to provide safe anesthesia services in rural communities. Physicians completing this one year program will be able to provide both elective and emergency anesthesia services for patients without severe systemic illnesses and prepare them to be a resource to their community. Physicians will also acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the anesthetic management of obstetrical emergencies, epidural analgesia, difficult airways, pain management, short-term ventilation, trauma and preparation of patients for safe transfer.
The NOSM U FPA program is nationally renown for the FPA boot camp, engagement in national competency development and eLearning. This program is connected to numerous community sites servicing the entirety of Northern Ontario. The opportunities for not only clinical exposure, but also future job opportunities are unparalleled.
This program has two spots available each year. One resident will be based at Health Sciences North (HSN) in Sudbury and the other will be based at the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. Both are tertiary care referral centers for their respective geographical areas in the north. Residents will work closely with highly skilled anesthesiologists in an environment that is dynamic, progressive and focused on education.
A significant proportion of the year, 32-40 weeks, will be spent in your home base where there will be exposure to a broad range of anesthesia services. The rest of the year includes rotations in critical care, pediatric anesthesia and rural comprehensive family medicine. Exposure to pediatric anesthesia occurs at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, while the rural comprehensive family medicine rotation is spent in one of the more rural centers in the north such as Huntsville, Timmins, Sioux Lookout or Kenora.
The Amazing Race Canada Visits Health Sciences North in Sudbury
Dr. Rob Anderson, NOSM University Associate Professor and PGME Dean (and previously the Medical Lead of the Health Sciences North (HSN) Simulation Lab) had a key role in an episode of the popular television show, The Amazing Race Canada. When the show made a stop in Sudbury, contestants had to perform a CPR challenge at HSN’s Simulation Lab, located at the Sudbury Outpatient Centre.
