PGY3 FM Addiction Medicine

NOSM University has developed a one-year Addiction Medicine (AM) Enhanced Skills Program to address the societal and community needs, and the shortage of addiction services in northern Ontario. The NOSM U Family Medicine Enhanced Skills Programs are fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. The inaugural resident to this new program will begin training in July 2023.

Dr. Mike Franklyn, Program Director – Addiction Medicine, and Assistant Professor, is a dedicated physician based in Sudbury with extensive experience in primary care, addictions, and mental health, both within the community and at provincial and national levels. Outside of his clinical work, Dr. Franklyn has a significant role in projects related to the unhoused, poverty, addiction, mental health, and harm reduction for patients and primary-care physicians. He completed medical school at McMaster University and completed his residency in Sudbury through the University of Ottawa. A faculty member with NOSM U from its inception, Dr. Franklyn has been an active leader in medical education.

Program Objectives

Residents in the NOSM U AM Program will be trained in holistic addiction care to both patient and community needs. Training will occur across various clinical settings with residents acting as collaborative members of a multidisciplinary team. Patient advocacy is a major goal of the AM program as residents will develop the expertise and skills by developing relationships with patients and their families, as well as partnering with agencies and organizations to influence health systems.

How to Apply

The AM program is seeking applicants with an interest in Addiction Medicine and who seeks to include AM as part of their future Family Medicine practice in a Northern, rural or remote community. Applicants should be self-directed and self-reflective with strong collaboration and communication skills. Residents in the AM program should be highly motivated and strive to be a lifelong learner. Applicants to the AM program have demonstrated a commitment to advocacy and social accountability, as training residents to serve as strong patient advocates is a training goal of the program.

To be eligible for the PGY3 enhanced skills program in Addiction Medicine, the candidate must be a PGY2 in a Canadian Family Medicine Residency Program at the time of application.
