Book a Standardized Patient

Who May Book an SP

  • Any faculty member, tutor, or preceptor affiliated with an accredited program at NOSM University can request an SP. The request must be supported and approved by the Program Director or equivalent.
  • External health or educational organizations.

To request an SP, please submit the Standardized Patient Request form electronically –Standardized Patient Request form_rev2024.docx. We require a minimum notice of 4 weeks for booking. The Standardized Patient Program Coordinator will review the request and respond accordingly. We reserve the right to decline requests based on scheduling conflicts, resource availability, or failure to meet request deadlines.

Types of Patient Encounters

SPs participate in various types of learning sessions, including medical history, hybrid simulations, counselling, clinical exams/procedures, physical exams/procedures (including breast and female/male pelvic), management, and ultrasound sessions.  However, invasive procedures are excluded from their scope.

Diverse Patient Portrayals

We have a wide range of experienced SPs capable of portraying patients in various scenarios, such as mental health issues, breaking bad news, difficult and angry patients, cross-cultural interviewing, domestic violence, boundary-crossing patients, pain, informed consent, medical error disclosure, advance care/end of life planning and  sexuality.

Fees and Payment

For information regarding rates of pay, please contact the  Standardized Patient Program Coordinator in your area.

Cases and Scripts

Requestors are responsible for providing their cases and scripts.

Props and Make-Up

Depending on the request, we have a small collection of props available. Simple make-up applications, including bruises, burns, scars, rashes, pallor, abrasions, redness, and swelling, can also be applied. Other make-up requests should be discussed with the Standardized Patient Program Coordinator.

Resources

In order to support you in using SP whether it be your first time or not, NOSM U has provided you with a SP User Guide based on the Association of Standardized Patients best practices. As well, it is a guide to create consistency for SPs across all events that they are booked for.  SP User Guide.pdf
