AFMC 2024 Medical School Application Fee Waiver

The 2024 Medical School Application Fee Waiver Program offers awarded students with free medical school applications to participating Canadian medical schools during the 2024-2025 application cycle. This program was developed to support medical school applicants facing financial barriers to applying to medical school. The Ontario program was collaboratively developed by the Price of a Dream (POD), the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC), the Council of Ontario Faculties of Medicine (COFM), and the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).

The application portal will be accessible from June 27, 2024 – August 22, 2024.

Reminder: the application submitted in June-Aug 2024 will be for the admission cycle of 2024-2025.

The Ontario program waives the $220 OMSAS processing fee and provides free applications for up to three Ontario medical schools of their choice (ranging from $125 – $390 total) for the 2024-2025 application cycle. The six Ontario medical schools include NOSM University.  In July 2024, using the Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS), start your Ontario medical school application for Fall 2025 admission. Your fee waiver award will be applied to your account so that when you submit your application, you will have the application fees waived for up to three medical schools ($125 – $390). To have the OMSAS processing fee waived ($220), you need to input the one-time voucher code that you will receive via email from AFMC, if successful.

Eligibility Criteria

This program is catered to any Canadian students or students with permanent resident status who anticipate applying to at least one Ontario medical school during the 2024-2025 application cycle and might have difficulty paying for medical school applications.

Note: If your application is successful, you will be informed by AFMC via email.

Ontario-specific Application Requirements In addition to the information listed under “Application Instructions” above, the Ontario fee waiver program application requires applicants to specify up to three Ontario medical schools that you desire your award to be applied to. The three schools that you select on your application cannot be changed after you submit your application, so make this choice wisely by referring to the Ontario Medical School Application Service website for more information.

 

Health Force Ontario Clerkship Travel Program (UME 3rd and 4th Year)

Ontario medical students in the final two years of their program (including those who participated in an extended/advanced clerkship program after September 1, 2017) may receive up to $1,500 (taxes included) in travel and accommodation expense reimbursement for one rotation per academic year at an Academic Health Science Centre in Ontario that is 100 kilometers or further from the clerk’s home medical school.

The goal of the Clerkship Travel Program is to:

• Improve distribution of physicians across Ontario by allowing exposure to a variety of practice settings;
• Enhance the mix of specialties in communities by allowing clinical clerks to explore career choices outside of their local area;
• Continue to promote Ontario as a preferred location for post-graduate education.

Am I eligible?

• Medical students enrolled in the last two years of an undergraduate program at any Ontario medical school;
• NEW: Medical students who participated in an extended/advanced clerkship program after September 1, 2017
• Accepted for a clinical rotation in Ontario at an Academic Health Science Centre hospital more than 100 kilometres from the clerk’s home medical school (with the exception of travel between campuses of the same medical school, e.g. travel from Thunder Bay and Sudbury for rotations at NOSM, travel between Windsor and London for rotations at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University);
• Rotations must be a minimum of two weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks*
• Have not received CTP travel and/or accommodation reimbursement for the same academic year; and
• Have not received compensation for travel and/or accommodations through another program

**Final Year Medical School Bursary (FYMSB) Application is now OPEN**

The Final Year Medical Student Bursary (FYMSB) application is now open for 4th-year medical students at NOSM U. Students who have previously received the bursary and those who are sponsored by the Canadian Forces are not eligible for the Bursary.

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) Payments

OSAP payments to NOSM University students will be applied directly to your NOSM University student account. Any amount of OSAP that you have been awarded that is above the amount of the first installment of tuition and fees will be sent directly to you.

1st Installment − $11,023.24 – applied to NOSM University student account.

                                 $3976.76 – sent directly to the student

NOSM University Financial Aid Information Sessions

NOSM University’s Financial Aid Office will be holding financial aid presentations throughout the year. These presentations will take place in person or via an interactive webcast for those who cannot be present.

Session 2: NOSM U Bursary application presentation

For many post graduate residents at NOSM University, incurring some debt from their undergraduate program through professional student line of credit and government student assistance programs is a common reality. However, the university recognizes the financial challenges that new residents encounter and offers a variety of financial aid options to assist you on your academic path.

Loan Forgiveness Program

The Canadian Government initiated a loan forgiveness program for residents who are considering working in rural or remote areas. This initiative aims to incentivize healthcare professionals to serve in underserved communities. Doctors who opt to work in small communities that are registered for this program can quality for significant financial support, receiving up to $8,000 per year. In exchange for this financial support, participating doctors are typically required to fulfil a service commitment of a specific number of hours in these underserved communities. Postgraduate residents who have received a loan through the Alberta Student Assistance Program may be eligible to maintain an interest-free status on their loans throughout their medical training.

Travel Funding

NOSM University provides funding for travel to clinical placement sites for core rotations and for electives in Northern Ontario. Additionally, travel expenses for mandatory academic sessions are also covered. It is important to adhere to the NOSM University Travel Management and General Expenses Policy for all travel and accommodation arrangements. Expense Reimbursement

NOSM University’s Finance Unit is responsible for reimbursing expenses incurred by residents throughout their academic year. This includes expenses related to travel, professional development, and other eligible items as deemed by the program. Resident representatives on the NOSMU PGME Budget Subcommittee have developed a comprehensive overview of all available funding resources and the process for accessing them. Family Medicine Residents

NOSM University is fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals and organizations that have made generous donations towards various awards and bursaries. These funds help ease the financial burden of residents and, in turn, help improve the health of the people of Northern Ontario by allowing residents to focus more on becoming a great medical practitioner. As you begin your internship at NOSMU, we recognize that financing your internship year can be challenging.  To assist you in managing the financial burden and maximizing your experience, here are some financial aid suggestions to consider:

Government Financial Assistance

While DPP interns are not eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program, there are other avenues for government financial assistance. Past learners have benefitted from the National Student Loans Service Centre Repayment Assistance Program (RAP), which offers negligible monthly payments during the repayment period.

External Awards and Bursaries

Explore the Financial Aid Office’s list of external awards and bursaries below that include options tailored for dietetic interns, including the Ignite Dietetic Internship Scholarship. There are also other opportunities that are applicable to all learners, including dietetic interns such as the RBC Future Launch Scholarship.

Financial Institution Student Loan

At NOSMU, we recognize the significance of financial assistance during your internship year. If you opt to apply for a student loan or line of credit through your financial institution, you may require a letter indicating that you are a full time student. These letters can be issued by the Registrar’s Office by making a request to registrar@nosm.ca.

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)

• Winter application open in November for the January start date
• Spring/Summer application opens in March for the May start date

Ross Memorial Hospital Medical Student Bursary – Open June 1 – Sept 1

The Ross Memorial Hospital Medical Student Bursary provides qualifying candidates with a bursary opportunity with the hopes that the candidate will choose to practice medicine in the City of Kawartha Lakes and apply for active privileges at Ross Memorial Hospital. A bursary of up to $2,000 per academic year will be provided to each qualifying candidate up to a maximum of $10,000 per fiscal year. Candidates may receive a bursary for a maximum of three academic years.

CRITERIA

• Have been a resident of the City of Kawartha Lakes or an adjacent community within the catchment areas of our Hospital for at least two years of the five years previous to undergraduate study.
• Be enrolled in one of the final four years of a Faculty of Medicine Program. (Open to all years in UME)
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Candidates must be prepared to commit to participate in a clinical elective at Ross Memorial Hospital within their academic training. The Hospital will maintain contact with bursary recipients during their residency program to explore opportunities for these clinical placements. Stuart Iglesias ESS/OSS Bursary Award

The SRPC recognizes the importance of rural ESS/OSS physicians in optimizing care for those living in rural and remote areas of Canada and would like to support learning opportunities and foster networking. This bursary is named in honour of Dr. Stuart Iglesias, who was not only an ESS and FPA provider himself but also spent his entire career supporting rural maternity and surgical services through advocacy, research, and education. His tireless contributions led to an important culture-shift which the SRPC continues to support today.

The Stuart Iglesias ESS/OSS Bursary Award is presented to one (1) Medical Student, one (1) Medical Resident and one (1) Rural Physician who can demonstrate their interest in, or is actively pursuing Enhanced Surgical Skills (ESS) and Obstetrical Surgical Skills (OSS) (or otherwise supporting rural surgical and maternity care) as a rural generalist in rural Canada.

Application and Eligibility Criteria:

Open to UME and PGME learners. All candidates must be SRPC members and in good academic standing and demonstrate their commitment to rural medicine through any of the following:

• Medical Students – Tell us how you intend to focus your medical journey as an ESS/OSS Rural Generalist.
• Medical Residents – Are you a current OSS or ESS resident, or a Family Medicine resident serious about applying to those programs (or otherwise supporting rural surgery/maternity care)?
• Rural Generalist – Are you a practicing rural generalist physician (with or without OSS/ESS) advocating for improved rural surgical and maternity care, locally, regionally, or nationally?

Nomination Process:

• Nominees must be SRPC members.
• Self-nominations must include a letter of support from a preceptor or SRPC physician member detailing how the nominee meets the award criteria.
• Preceptors or SRPC physician members may also nominate candidates by describing how the nominee meets the criteria.
• Format: Microsoft Word document (max 250 words) outlining how the nominee meets the criteria.
• Submission: Send nomination emails to nominations@srpc.ca.
• Timeline: The nomination window is from July 1st to August 31st every even year (2024, 2026, 2028). Nomination letters will be reviewed in September, with winners announced in October. (3 months prior to ESS/OSS event)

This award is open to all SRPC Medical Student/Resident/Physician members across Canada. Please note that individuals may only win this award once.

Prize: Each recipient will receive $1000 credited towards attending the ESS/OSS event.

Strong Mothers Achieving Remarkable Triumph (S.M.A.R.T.) Scholarship – Due September 1, 2024

The S.M.A.R.T. Scholarship program awards 3 scholarships annually, each valued at $1,500 CAD. Applications will be accepted from July 1st 2024 to Sept 1st 2024.

In order to publicize the S.M.A.R.T. Canadian Rheumatology Association (CRA)

Best Abstract by a Medical Student– Oct.4, 2024

The Award has been established to recognize exceptional research presented as an oral or poster presentation and to encourage participation of medical students at the CRA Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM).

1. The first author must be a Canadian medical student under the supervision of a CRA member.
2. The majority of the research presented must have been conducted during medical school.

The award is sponsored by the Canadian Rheumatology Association.

The award consists of a $1000 cheque and a certificate.

Molloy Medicine Award – Oct. 15, 2024 before 2pm EST

The Molloy Medicine Award supports undergraduate students of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in Canada. This award was generously created by the estate of Brian Molloy.

In the 2024-2025 academic year, the Molloy Medicine Award will support up to 15 non-renewable scholarships. Scholarships are valued at $10,000 – $12,500 each for one year.

– Preference will be given to applicants with existing ties or past efforts to work, study or volunteer with the following vulnerable or underserved populations: addiction and mental health, Indigenous communities, refugees, and immigrants, rural or remote communities, people of diverse sexualities and genders, home, and long-term care.

Successful applicants will also be eligible for additional funding of $2,500 upon completion of one clinical elective in family medicine prior to August 2025, or if accepted to a Family Medicine Residency in R1 Match in the same year of receiving the award.

Eligibility

You are eligible if you are:

• a Canadian citizen
• registered as a full-time undergraduate student in the MD program at a Faculty of Medicine at an accredited school of Medicine in Canada
• have completed the first year of your program when applying for the scholarship
• in good academic standing
• graduating in spring 2025 or later.

AFMC Learner Changemaker Awards – TBD

Overview

The two AFMC Learner Changemaker Awards each celebrate an exceptional 1) medical learner (medical student/resident) and 2) a health research graduate student/post-doctoral scholar who has created real and meaningful change for those training in Canadian faculties of medicine or health sciences faculties. Nominations are open to a medical education learner and a health research trainee, including any undergraduate, postgraduate, or graduate student or post-doctoral scholar currently enrolled or training at a faculty of medicine or health sciences in Canada.

Selection Criteria

The nominations must provide:
• Evidence of leadership, advocacy, and collaboration in innovation within their faculty.
• Evidence of exceptional contributions through engagement in faculty work
(e.g., including, but not limited to committees, task forces, projects,
establishment of new initiatives and prior recognition).

The Award will be presented at the International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM). Award recipients will be provided with a $1,500 honorarium, full conference registration, reimbursement of economy air travel, and one night accommodation.

Health Sciences North (HSN) Simulation Laboratory 
Mary-Catherine Kerr Interprofessional Education(IPE) Excellence Award – Due Nov 15, 2024

Overview

The Health Sciences North (HSN) Simulation Laboratory is excited to announce the creation of the inaugural Mary-Catherine Kerr IPE Excellence Award. This award has been established to celebrate the outstanding contributions of Dr. Mary-Catherine Kerr, the previous Simulation Lab Medical Director. Dr. Kerr is a practicing intensivist at HSN who’s previous and ongoing efforts continually strive to advance Interprofessional Education (IPE) excellence at HSN. This annual award is accompanied by a $2,500 grant, to acknowledge and bolster individuals/teams that exemplify a commitment to fostering collaboration, innovation, and excellence in IPE at HSN. This award is intended for those who aspire to launch and/or strengthen IPE simulation programs at HSN. Programming options can include activities at the HSN Simulation Lab, in-situ departmental simulation sessions, or community-based simulation initiatives. Applications may be submitted from one individual applicant, or they can also be submitted in the form of a team application. Applicants should be in the role of educator(s), practicing healthcare professional(s) or learner(s) employed by or affiliated with HSN who demonstrate a strong commitment to initiating IPE activities, fostering collaborative practices, enhancing learning outcomes, and contributing to the overall quality of IPE initiatives. This includes individual(s) with innovative ideas and a passion for starting new IPE simulation programs within our organization.

• Deliver Learner feedback
  A stated plan to provide feedback to all learners.

City of Thunder Bay Medical Student and Resident Book Grant  – Due Dec 31, 2024

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is proud to provide local learners enrolled in medical school or a residency program in Canada with a book grant of $250 to aid financially with their studies. Students are eligible to receive the grant once during their first year of a Canadian MD program, and once during their first year of a Canadian residency program.

Eligibility:

• Learner must be currently enrolled in their first year of an MD program or medical residency program at a Canadian institution. Proof of enrollment is required.
• Learner must have attended high school within the District of the City of Thunder Bay. Proof of graduation (diploma or transcript) is required.

Application should include:

• Completed application form
• Proof of enrollment of MD or Residency program
• Proof of attendance of a high school within the District of the City of Thunder Bay
• Current contact information (email address and telephone number)

 

Deadline: Medical students must submit an application before December 31^st of the same year they start medical school.

Society of Rural Physicians of Canada (SRPC)

Student and Resident Essay Award – Dec 31, 2024

Each year the SRPC’s Nominations and Awards Committee hosts a rural essay contest for medical students and residents. The winning essays will be added to our website and considered for publication in the Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine (CJRM).

The winners will receive the equivalent of $500 (student) or $1000 (resident) credited towards the cost of attending the SRPC’s Annual Rural and Remote Medicine Conference.

Eligible costs may include registration, travel to and from the conference, accommodations and social events.

Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC)

Student Leadership Award – Jan 26, 2025

The FMWC sponsors this annual award to recognize the FMWC medical student member showing the most potential in the realm of leadership. Particular interest is given to candidates who demonstrate leadership in support of the FMWC mission statement. The award will be given out to the successful nominee at the next FMWC Annual General Meeting & Educational Sessions.

A copy of the nominee’s CV must also be submitted to National Office at fmwcmain@fmwc.ca.

Both the nominee and the nominator are required to be current FMWC members. The deadline for nominations is January 26th (tentatively).

 

Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship – Annual Renewal TBD

4 learners will be selected as the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship through NOSM University based on financial need and eligibility criteria.

Criteria

• These scholarships are intended for learners who have been directly or indirectly impacted by the Ukrainian conflict or other conflicts.
• Successful candidates must be actively registered in a undergraduate or graduate program at NOSM University during the 2023-2024 academic year.
• Candidates must demonstrate financial need.
• Applicants must be in Ontario to qualify. Residency or citizenship status is not a requirement.

CaRMS Awards

Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership – TBD

To be eligible for the Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership (SBSAL), applicants must be undergraduate medical students or postgraduate medical residents/trainees enrolled full-time in a Canadian medical education program, and residing in Canada as Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Each year, an undergraduate and a postgraduate winner will be selected based on the strength of their individual submissions and accompanying letters of support. Proposed leadership training and/or volunteer activities will be considered in the context of supporting the applicant’s submission. Please note that individuals who serve or have served on the CaRMS Board of Directors or any of its Committees are not eligible to apply for this award.

Application adjudication

Applications are adjudicated in March – April by the Awards Committee* of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). Winners are selected in May – June and all applicants are notified of the status of their submissions. Applications are evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Academic and work leadership experience
• Volunteer leadership activities with community impact
• Supervisor support
• Proposed leadership training and/or volunteer activity

Winners are announced in June via CaRMS’ social media channels.

FORSEE are offering an $8000.00 scholarship to a student who has expressed an interest in further exploring the field of Ophthalmology through both research and clinical venues.

Eligibility:
1. Completed second year of medical school.
2. The successful candidate will engage in a clinical research project with the aim of presenting this scientific work through a presentation at an accredited Ophthalmology Conference.

Additional Criteria

• The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to further their education and clinical skills in the various sub-specialty disciplines within Ophthalmology.
• Successful candidates will be chosen based on their academic merit, prior research experience, their expressed interest in the field of Ophthalmology, and a full-time commitment to the 8 week scholarship program during the summer of 2024.
• The FORSEE CANADA scholar will be working alongside a variety of academic-affiliated Ophthalmologists during this period to facilitate their research project and their clinical skills education.

CFPC Medical Student Scholarship – TBD

The CFPC Medical Student Scholarships recognize outstanding medical students who have demonstrated an interest in or commitment to a career in family medicine. Each Canadian medical school is invited to nominate a medical student in their second-last undergraduate year of study at the time of nomination (graduating class of 2025).

The value of the CFPC Medical Student Scholarship is $5,000. The award will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024. The recipients will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the CFPC Medical Student Scholarship may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

 

Eligibility criteria:

Medical students in their second-last year of study are eligible.

Medical students who have demonstrated an interest in or commitment to a career in family medicine are eligible.

Nominees cannot have received this scholarship in the past three years.

Dr. Kent Saylor Bursary for Indigenous Medical Students – Oct 31, 2024

Indigenous medical students studying in year 2 or year 3 of UME. $2,500 funding each year by Healthy Generations and a complimentary one year CPS medical student membership

Criteria:

To qualify, candidates must:

• Be an Indigenous* medical student at a Canadian university with a strong interest in paediatrics.
• Must be in their 2^nd or 3^rd year of medical school
• Submit an application and budget online outlining the applicant’s interest in paediatrics and how the funds will enhance their education
• Include a letter of support from Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, the medical school faculty lead for Indigenous students, or a faculty member.

Priority will be given to requests submitted by applicants who have not previously received the Dr. Kent Saylor Bursary for Indigenous Medical Students.  However, previous bursary recipients may resubmit a new letter of request for bursary funding.

*To be eligible, an individual must attach proof regarding  First Nations (status and non-status),  Inuit or Metis, Band Council, Tribal Council, Treaty, community, nation or other affiliation.  Accepted documentation may include:

• A copy of a valid Indian Status or Treaty card;
• A copy of a valid Nunavut Trust Certificate card, roll number or any other proof accepted by Inuit communities;
• A copy of a membership card from a Métis registry recognized by the Métis National Council (Métis Nation of Ontario, the Manitoba Métis Federation, the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, the Métis Nation of Alberta and the Métis Nation British Columbia);

The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the CFPC Medical Student Scholarship may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Eligibility criteria:

Applicants must be Indigenous medical students in Canada.

Applicants must be in their second-last year of study.

Applicants must be in good academic standing.

Applicants cannot have received this scholarship in the past three years.

Taxable income:

Award funds received are taxable and are considered part of your personal income in the fiscal year in which they are received. The Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) will issue a statement of income (T4A information slip) at the end of the year for these amounts. We recommend that you obtain professional advice from your financial/tax adviser regarding the income tax implications of this award.

Selection process:

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)’s Indigenous Health Committee will recommend the recipient of this scholarship to the national Honours and Awards Committee.
