NOSM University Financial Aid Information Sessions

NOSM University’s Financial Aid Office will be holding financial aid presentations throughout the year. These presentations will take place in person or via an interactive webcast for those who cannot be present.

Session 2: NOSM U Bursary application presentation

For many post graduate residents at NOSM University, incurring some debt from their undergraduate program through professional student line of credit and government student assistance programs is a common reality. However, the university recognizes the financial challenges that new residents encounter and offers a variety of financial aid options to assist you on your academic path.

Loan Forgiveness Program

The Canadian Government initiated a loan forgiveness program for residents who are considering working in rural or remote areas. This initiative aims to incentivize healthcare professionals to serve in underserved communities. Doctors who opt to work in small communities that are registered for this program can quality for significant financial support, receiving up to $8,000 per year. In exchange for this financial support, participating doctors are typically required to fulfil a service commitment of a specific number of hours in these underserved communities. Postgraduate residents who have received a loan through the Alberta Student Assistance Program may be eligible to maintain an interest-free status on their loans throughout their medical training.

Travel Funding

NOSM University provides funding for travel to clinical placement sites for core rotations and for electives in Northern Ontario. Additionally, travel expenses for mandatory academic sessions are also covered. It is important to adhere to the NOSM University Travel Management and General Expenses Policy for all travel and accommodation arrangements. Expense Reimbursement

NOSM University’s Finance Unit is responsible for reimbursing expenses incurred by residents throughout their academic year. This includes expenses related to travel, professional development, and other eligible items as deemed by the program. Resident representatives on the NOSMU PGME Budget Subcommittee have developed a comprehensive overview of all available funding resources and the process for accessing them. This resource serves as a valuable guide to help residents navigate the various financial aid options. As you begin your internship at NOSMU, we recognize that financing your internship year can be challenging.  To assist you in managing the financial burden and maximizing your experience, here are some financial aid suggestions to consider:

Government Financial Assistance

While NODIP interns are not eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program, there are other avenues for government financial assistance. Past learners have benefitted from the National Student Loans Service Centre Repayment Assistance Program (RAP), which offers negligible monthly payments during the repayment period.

External Awards and Bursaries

Explore the Financial Aid Office’s list of external awards and bursaries below that include options tailored for dietetic interns, including the Ignite Dietetic Internship Scholarship. There are also other opportunities that are applicable to all learners, including dietetic interns such as the RBC Future Launch Scholarship.

Financial Institution Student Loan

At NOSMU, we recognize the significance of financial assistance during your internship year. If you opt to apply for a student loan or line of credit through your financial institution, you may require a letter indicating that you are a full time student. These letters can be issued by the Registrar’s Office by making a request to registrar@nosm.ca.

The Holdstock-Piachaud Student Essay Prize – TBD
The Holdstock-Piachaud Essay Prize was set up to encourage students to explore the themes covered by the journal Medicine, Conflict and Survival, in memory of Douglas Holdstock and Jack Piachaud who were for many years inspirational editors of the Journal. They are keen to receive essays that explore insights, concerns and original perspectives on issues relevant to the aims of the journal, from students who will be shaping the future. Whichever title you choose to tackle, you are encouraged to base your argument on relevant literature and to develop it drawing on your own experience and reflections.

FORSEE Canada
Social Eyecare Scholarship 2023 – TBD
FORSEE are offering an $8000.00 scholarship to a student that is passionate about undertaking a social eye care project.

Eligibility:
1. First or Second year medical students, or
2. Undergraduate or Graduate students in Public Health or Allied Health fields.

Application Process:
1. Submit CV and Cover letter at FORSEE online portal.
2. Submit a Social Eyecare Proposal (500 words) that includes the following:
a. Identify an unmet vision need in a vulnerable population.
b. Include a project outline that will include purpose, methodology, and requirements necessary to complete this project in a twelve-month time frame.

Canadian Medical Hall of Fame
Award for Medical Students – TBD

Laureates of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame cite qualities such as perseverance, collaboration and entrepreneurial spirit as contributors to their success as national and world health leaders. The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Award recognizes medical students who demonstrate these qualities and show outstanding potential as future leaders and innovators of health care in Canada. Each Canadian medical school is invited to nominate one (1) medical student, completing their second undergraduate year of study at the time of application.

CRITERIA

• Must be a medical student in good standing completing the second year of study or beginning clerkship the following semester
• Demonstrated leadership through school involvement and/or community-based volunteer projects or extracurricular activities
• Superior interpersonal and communication skills
• Academic excellence with a demonstrated interest in advancing knowledge
