The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) was created as a result of advocacy in our region, to realize access to quality health care for all Northern Ontarians. The year 2019 marks an important milestone for the School. Ten years ago, NOSM celebrated the MD Charter Class graduation and the completion of the first cohorts of Family Medicine residents and students of the Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program (NODIP). NOSM was founded as the result of a grassroots effort by many community groups, municipalities, leaders and advocates who rallied together to make physician supply a priority in the North. As I continue to make community visits, I can see that the founding spirit for NOSM, while still alive, needs to be rekindled as we proceed to the next stages of NOSM’s future.
