We have a vibrant Francophone community at NOSM. The NOSM Francophone Reference Group (FRG)/Groupe consultatif francophone (GCF) met in Sudbury on January 18 for a strategic planning session followed by a well-attended Francophone public consultation session in Thunder Bay on January 23. I dusted off my French-speaking skills and hope to build on my vocabulary, as I have work to do. Food insecurity in the North is a multifaceted problem. Northerners rely on a mix of traditional or wild food and market food, and both harvesting and food shipping costs are extremely high. Canada's efforts to provide Northerners in isolated communities with improved access is failing to lower the cost of perishable and nutritious food in northern communities by providing northern retailers with a subsidy on a select list of foods.
