Under the direction of the Vice President, Research and Graduate Studies, the Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies is responsible for aspects of planning, development, and implementation of graduate studies compatible with the NOSM University Strategic Plan. The position has an administrative stipend of $10,000 per academic year and has a teaching remission of minimum of 2.5 teaching credits with the possibility of additional teaching credits to be discussed and agreed as per the Collective Agreement (Ref. Article 2.2, A, (iv), b).

Responsibilities

Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Contribute to the overall research profile of NOSM University in conjunction with the Vice President, Research and Graduate Studies and the Assistant Dean, Research;
  • Oversee all activities related to NOSM University graduate programming by participating in strategic planning, budget development processes and continuing development of graduate programs, including a PhD program;
  • Provide expertise and direction in the development and implementation of the NOSM University Master of Medical Studies graduate program;
  • Chair the NOSM University Graduate Studies Committee;
  • Coordinate and liaise with the Deans of Graduate Studies at other universities;
  • Contribute to advisory committees as needed for graduate studies-related matters;
  • Liaise with related faculties, departments and schools at other universities;
  • Prepare Annual Reports on Master of Medical Studies graduate program;
  • Represent NOSM University at the Association of Faculties of Medicine Graduate Studies committee;
  • Participate as needed in regional, national and international graduate studies-related committees;
  • Oversee branding and advertisement of NOSM University graduate programs;
  • Provide collegial leadership to appropriate personnel;
  • Provide training to appropriate personnel in relevant techniques and services; and
  • May be invited to participate in the University’s senior leadership and/or senior academic leadership group(s).

Qualifications

Education

  • The successful candidate must hold a PhD, or may hold a MD (or equivalent degree) along with relevant experience. Candidates must possess or be eligible for a NOSM faculty appointment.
  • Is eligible to apply for, or holds, Graduate Studies supervisory status.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience as a graduate research supervisor in health or medical research
  • Experience in research activities including applying for and receiving grant funds, managing a research program, publishing results, protecting intellectual property and attending research conferences
  • Experience promoting a productive research environment to foster the research of others
  • Experience working in distance education
  • Experience with rural health research
  • Experience in bioethics and integrity
  • Experience with interdisciplinary approaches to graduate studies
  • Experience with rural, Indigenous and/or Francophone communities
  • Has an understanding of what would constitute clinically relevant and impactful research in a Northern Ontario context
  • Superior communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Flexible and comfortable with diversity

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
