Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a mandatory retirement age in Ontario?
No. As of December 12, 2006, the Ontario Human Rights Code protects all persons aged 18 and over against discrimination on the basis of their age.
How do I know if I can retire?
Knowing if you are able to retire is a big decision and is different for everyone. Involve those closest to you in the decision and ensure you are seeking advice of a financial advisor.
I am ready to retire, what at the next steps?
The next step in the decision-making process is to select a date. Be sure to reference your collective agreement (if applicable) to ensure you are following the appropriate time frames. Once your retirement date is determined, have a discussion with your supervisor so you can talk about the transition period, plans for unused vacation, etc.
Finally, you will need to notify Human Resources of your retirement in writing.
