The Board of Directors of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) held a face-to-face meeting in Thunder Bay on December 1 and 2, 2011.
On the first day of the two-day meeting, Board members participated in orientation and interactive sessions, and learned more about the spectrum of NOSM’s education and training programs with information presented by several of the School’s senior leaders.
Later that evening at the Board dinner, Awards of Excellence were presented to learners, faculty and preceptors by Dr. Lisa Graves, Associate Dean and Mr. Dominic Giroux, Chair of the Board and President of Laurentian University. Learners receiving awards included Mr. Pouya Sadeghi Aval, Mr. Daniel Durocher, Mr. Brian Lorbetskie, and Mr. Zachary Veitch. Drs. Tara Baron, John Kargbo, Claire Perreault, and Richard Senior were the recipients of faculty and preceptor awards.
On the second day of the meeting, the Board participated in a tour of NOSM’s Medical School Building at Lakehead University. The tour was followed by a presentation on “Good Governance” by Board member Mr. Arie Hoogenboom and NOSM Dean Dr. Roger Strasser, and by updates delivered to the Board by the Board Executive, Quality Monitoring, Nominating, and Advancement Committees.
At the formal Board meeting concluding their two days together, Ms. Angèle Brunelle, the Executive Director of l’Accueil francophone de Thunder Bay, and a nominee of NOSM’s Francophone Reference Group, was appointed to the Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors approved a Financial Report from the Finance and Audit Committee for the six-month period ending October 31, 2011.
Mr. Dominic Giroux, President of Laurentian University and Chair of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s Board of Directors, noted that the two-day meeting accomplished several important objectives. “Group cohesion and opportunities for interactive sessions and discussions are enhanced when Board members are able to meet in person. This two-day meeting, which included thought-provoking presentations, and celebrated the outstanding contribution of NOSM’s learners, faculty and preceptors, was a great success,” he said.
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled to occur on March 7, 2012.
