Phase 1 (Year 2) NOSM University Self-Directed Career Exploration – Electives

Application Dates & Deadlines

Career Exploration – Elective Period 1: October 14-27, 2024

Career Exploration – Elective Period 2: February 3-16, 2025

• Elective Application Open: July 03, 2024 (at 12PM EST) – priority scheduling will occur for Period 1.
• Deadline for Elective Application Submission for Period 1 (if NOSM U Housing is required): July 22, 2024 (at 11:59PM EST)

Important Note: Applications received post-deadline will not guarantee preferred placement and/or NOSM U Housing.

Electives of 2 weeks or greater will include:

• NOSM University Housing and funding for travel (one round trip), if required
• A preceptor stipend to the preceptor

Important Note: Once the clinical elective placement is confirmed, there are no changes or cancellations of the clinical placement unless there are extenuating circumstances that do not allow the learner to complete it.

Electives less than 2 weeks:

• Learner are not eligible to completed 1 week electives.

Phase 3 (Year 4) NOSM University Electives

Elective Period: April 22, 2024 to April 6, 2025

• Elective Application Open: Oct 23, 2023 (at 12PM EST)
• Deadline for Elective Application Submission: Nov 12, 2023 (at 11:59PM EST)

Important Note: Applications received post deadline will not guarantee preferred placement and/or NOSM U Housing.

Electives of 4 weeks or greater will include:

• Housing and funding for travel (one round trip), if required
• A preceptor stipend to the preceptor

Important: These electives may be subdivided as 2 and 2, but must total a minimum of 4 weeks within the same community, in order to be eligible for this funding.

Electives less than 4 weeks will include:

• A preceptor stipend to the preceptor

Important: These electives are not eligible for Housing and funding for travel. If the elective placement is less than four consecutive weeks in the same community an applicable fee for housing may apply, if housing is available.

NOSM University resident elective applications must be received no later than 8-weeks prior to the start of the rotation. Electives are sourced on a first-come, first-serve basis and residents are encouraged to apply for electives as soon as possible.

In the event a change should occur to a submitted elective application or confirmed elective, it is important to notify the Community Relations Coordinator well in advance (no less than 8 weeks prior to the anticipated start date).

Although some learners may contact preceptors directly to discuss placement learning objectives, learners should refrain from setting elective dates with a preceptor. Our internal administrative process assures that all learners have equitable access to the available placement opportunities in Northern Ontario.
