UME Student Faculty Advisors
The UME Student Faculty Advisors play an important role in NOSM University’s (NOSM U’s) confidential career advising system that integrates the efforts of faculty members, directors of required clinical learning experiences, and Learner Support Services. Faculty in this position, in collaboration with Learner Affairs Officers (LAOs), assist our medical students in exploring career options and determining appropriate approaches to the next steps in their medical training. The LAO will refer UME students to the Faculty Advisors, as necessary.
Dr. Prashant Jani

Dr. Jani serves as an Associate Professor at NOSM U and an Anatomic Pathologist at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Joining NOSM U in 2005, he has played a pivotal role as the pathology lead, introducing digital pathology and digitizing the entire pathology slide collection. Dr. Jani has been deeply involved in curriculum development and implementation and also serves as the Director of the Physician Wellness Initiative at NOSM U. As a Faculty Advisor, he is dedicated to guiding and mentoring students, fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, and helping them succeed in their medical careers.

Dr. Aviraj Deshmukh

Dr. Deshmukh is a neurologist working at Health Sciences North (HSN), Sudbury since 2021. He has a hospital based practice. His subspeciality interests are stroke and interventional neurology. He is also an active researcher affiliated with Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) and currently leading multiple clinical studies at HSN. He is an International Medical Graduate trained in multiple places including India, Austria and Canada. He is excited to support students in their learning and career goals.
