OSAP General Information
The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a government-funded initiative designed to provide financial support to students pursuing higher education at accredited universities and colleges in Ontario. This program offers a combination of low-interest loans and non-repayable grants to help learners manage the costs associated with education. For many learners OSAP funding is the primary source of financial assistance. OSAP is typically directed to NOSM University to help cover essential education expenses such as tuition, ancillary, and registration fees. Recognizing the substantial costs involved in pursuing medical and health education, all Ontario resident learners studying in the undergraduate medical program and master’s of medical studies are strongly encouraged to apply for OSAP to ensure they have the financial resources needed to focus on their studies. The application process should completed directly through the OSAP website. To learn more about OSAP, including eligibility criteria, funding options, and how to apply, students should visit the Learn About OSAP webpage. Taking advantage of OSAP can make a substantial difference in managing financial resources and expenses in medical education.

OSAP Inquiries
How to Apply to OSAP?
You may apply to OSAP directly through the OSAP Website. For more information please visit the How to apply for OSAP webpage.
When should I apply?
OSAP applications typically open a few months prior to the start of your study period. We urge you to apply for OSAP as early as possible to avoid delays in funding. OSAP funding is a great opportunity to help cover a portion of your tuition and registration fees. Learners with completed and confirmed OSAP funding applications may be deferred from the Payment Due Dates for ONLY the amount OSAP is to cover. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered for payment deferral and account balances will remain payable. Ensure your OSAP application is in good standing prior to the tuition payment due dates. A financial aid email handbook will be sent to UME learners via email detailing when OSAP applications will be open and additional financial aid considerations.
I’m new to OSAP and have never applied, what is my first step?
You must register for an OSAP Access Number (OAN) through the OSAP website. Information regarding OAN’s, retrieving lost log details are specified on the OSAP Log in Help webpage.
How much will I receive in OSAP funding and what impacts the amounts I am assessed?
Each application is reviewed individually to calculate a financial need ranking along with loan and grant amounts. Factors that play a part in your funding evaluation include your educational program, course load, study period length, tuition rates, personal and spousal income, number of dependents, living expenses, and more.
Can I accept grants only?
Yes, you can accept grants only by indicating so on your OSAP application under funding details. As a medical learner we advise that you accept all loans from OSAP as they remain interest free while in studies and have lower rates with simpler repayment plans compared to a student line of credit with your bank.
Why is my OSAP application on hold?
OSAP applications are typically placed on a funding hold due to incorrectly submitted information or due to outstanding and required supporting documentation. For detailed instructions log into your OSAP profile and visit the message centre located on the top of your applications page. Any questions can be forwarded to financialaid@nosm.ca.
How do I manage my OSAP loans and repayments with the National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC)?
To manage your student loans and repayments please visit the National Student Loans Service Center (NSLSC) The NSLSC can be contacted via phone at 1-888-815-4514.
When will I be required to pay back my loans?
Loan repayment will initiate 6 months after graduation or without continuous registration. You will be required to make payments towards your federal and provincial loan balances. There are plenty of repayment assistance programs available along with debt management models such as debt consolidation. Speak with the Financial Aid Office for details. Please note that if a leave of absence is granted and your 6 month non repayment grace period is utilized than upon return and completion of your program an additional 6 month grace period for repayment will not be granted. Additionally, please note that provincial loans will begin accruing interest immediately after graduation.
How much interest will I accumulate on my OSAP loans?
Approximately 30% of your government loan is Provincial. Provincial loans have an interest rate of approximately 7.95%
Approximately 70% of your government loan is Federal. Federal loans have a 0% interest effective April 1st, 2023.
Example:
If you had a government loan of $40,000. $12,000 (30%) is your Provincial loan. Charged at an interest rate of 7.95%. $28,000 (70%) is your Federal loan. Charged 0% interest.
