Reporting
The General Surgery Academic Coordinator reports to the Program Director, General Surgery.
Responsibilities
Summary of Functions
In conjunction with the Program Director, the Academic Coordinator is responsible for the planning, organizing, coordinating, and quality of all academic sessions for the residency program.
Key Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Instructional Designers, create a coherent curriculum for the residency program with clear goals and objectives that supplements and enhances the residents’ clinical experience so residents achieve the required competencies
- Ensure the curriculum meets all accreditation standards for the relevant discipline including specific teaching of the Intrinsic CanMEDS Roles
- Identify faculty to facilitate/teach during Academic days and working with them to ensure the content meets the objectives and competencies
- Assure the quality, responsiveness and relevancy of the residency program academic sessions regarding residents’ needs
- Review session evaluations and periodically seeking feedback directly from residents about the academic days
- Attend Residency Program Committee (RPC) meetings to discuss the academic curriculum
- Ensure that effective preparation for the Royal College Certification Exams is an integral part of the academic curriculum.
- Participate as a member of the PGEC Subcommittee on Curriculum and Assessment/Evaluation and any other required committees and activities
- Where appropriate, liaise with Francophone Affairs and Indigenous Affairs to integrate Francophone and Indigenous educational activities into the curriculum
- Annually review the program content with the RPC to ensure academic accountability and that accreditation standards of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) are met
Qualifications
Education
- A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario, with certification from the RCPSC (or equivalent as determined by the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U
- Minimum of three (3) years recent regional practice experience
- Minimum of three (3) years recent experience as a preceptor
- Substantial knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by regional and rural clinicians
- Commitment to development and improvement of medical education in Northern Ontario
- Self-motivated and directed
- Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skill
- Preference will be given to NOSM U faculty residing in Northern Ontario
Language
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
Remuneration
- As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process
Time Commitment
- Two (2.0) days per month
