Competition Number: 2024-1943-DMPosition Start Date: March 1, 2025
Theme 5 addresses the clinical elements of the UME curriculum and is divided into two curriculum committees, Introduction to Clinical Medicine (Years 1 and 2) and Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics (Years 3 and 4).
In Phase 1 (Years 1 and 2), the Theme 5 curriculum focuses on communication skills, components of health history and physical examination of body systems, as well as foundational skills in clinical reasoning. This curriculum is delivered through a variety of educational sessions:
- Structured Clinical Skills sessions (SCS)
- Clinical labs
- Whole group sessions
- Clinical Reasoning sessions
- Medicine in Practice sessions
Currently, Theme 5 is in process of curriculum renewal and elements of the Theme 5 curriculum are changing.
CBM 107
Year 2 of the undergraduate program at NOSM University begins with this 6-week module. For the Academic Year of 2024-25 the clinical curriculum in this module focuses on pediatric assessments, while the module in general covers cancer, immunology, and hematology. Due to the curriculum renewal project, the Theme 5 content of this module will be different for the Academic Year 2025-26 and beyond. Some of the pediatric content (adolescent interviews) will be moved to another module, and new SCS sessions that relate to cancer, immunology, and hematology in adults will be incorporated.
Reporting
The Theme 5 Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM), Module Clinical Content Coordinator reports to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education. Collegial and collaborative supervision, leadership and guidance, including delegation of tasks and contribution to performance review, will be by the Assistant Dean, Clinical Education, and the Theme 5 Introduction to Clinical Medicine Curriculum Committee Co-Chairs.
Responsibilities
- You will be assigned module 107 from Phase 1 Year 2
- You will be responsible for overseeing Clinical Curriculum Content and Assessment of your module.
Assessment Responsibilities
- Set the Theme 5 questions for the module’s Formative Module Review Examination (FMR). The questions should be representative of the types of questions on the Summative Examination or highlight topics that may have performed poorly in previous year’s exams or OSCEs. The questions can be refreshed as necessary, but there is no expectation of new material annually, as long as the questions are kept up to date and reasonably reflect the level of difficulty of the P1SA exam questions.
- Set the Theme 5 questions for the module’s Phase 1 Summative Assessment (P1SA). Each year you will review the previous year’s exam question statistics and the student comments to prepare the examination. Each year’s P1SA should be at least 20% different from the previous year (previous ‘good’ questions can be reworked; poor performing questions can be tweaked, or new questions can be written). Please refer to the relevant Student Assessment documents and blueprint appendices for further information. Content for questions can come from Structured Clinical Skills (SCS), Clinical Lab Sessions, Clinical Reasoning Sessions, Medicine in Practice Sessions or any other sessions that have Theme 5 learning objectives. Exam questions should be tagged to learning objectives for the purposes of generating reports to provide student feedback.
- Review of P1SA post examination statistics (class distribution, statistics on each MCQ) for any poor performing questions or keying errors. In collaboration with the Theme 5 ICM Course Chair, approve the results for release to students. This should be done within three to five days after receipt.
- Consult with the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) committee chair regarding possible OSCE stations relevant to the content of your module.
Reassessment and Remediation Responsibilities
- Provide input on any reassessment or remediation plans required for students who had difficulty with the content of the module. The Theme 5 ICM Course chair(s) will prepare the formal reassessment or remediation plan.
- Participate in supporting students who are involved in reassessment the module content.
- You may be invited to participate in a student’s formal remediation plan for your module. If you accept this work, it is outside of this contract and will have a separate stipend based on faculty hourly rates.
Curriculum Responsibilities
- Annually review the Theme 5 Module Objectives the module for relevancy, updates and accuracy in curriculum mapping.
- Review your module’s Structured Clinical Skills sessions and any other session in the module that integrates clinical content and provide input on the relevancy, accuracy or logistics of the sessions, including review of cases, objectives, student and tutor guides and skills worksheets.
- Work with the staff in the Standardized Patient Program to ensure SCS revisions are suitable and feasible regarding the roles for Standardized Patients.
- When required, provide feedback and your expertise to the Lab Coordinator for any of the Module’s Theme 5 Lab sessions (if relevant).
- Provide suggestions on workshops or simulation sessions for Phase 1 Academic weeks.
- Provide recommendations for changes or updates to the Theme 5 content and resources based on feedback received during the Module delivery for that academic year. You will be provided with a Program Evaluation Report to aid in this process. These will be reviewed with the Theme 5 ICM Course Chair and brought to Phase 1 Committee for approval. Please see the deadlines calendar for dates related to your module.
- Act as a resource for any questions about curriculum content or resources that may arise from students, faculty, SCS coordinators or the Module Coordinator during the delivery of the Module. These issues can be brought to the attention of the Theme 5 ICM Course Chair(s) as required.
- Provide input and advice to the Theme 5 ICM Chair(s) as required in discussions about the overall content and delivery methods for Theme 5 material or new proposals for new curriculum.
- Be involved in the development and delivery of the regular Faculty Orientation sessions (FOS) for SCS tutors in the module.
- When required, provide input on Medicine in Practice or Clinical Reasoning sessions relevant to the Module.
- Participate in any Topic Oriented Session (TOS) renewal projects in collaboration with Theme 4 Module Content Coordinators. TOS cases may be reviewed with the purpose of ensuring the objectives and content that is delivered is clinically relevant and appropriate for a TOS.
Committee Responsibilities
- All Theme 5 Module Clinical Content Coordinators (MCCs) are voting members of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Curriculum Committee. This committee is responsible for overseeing the clinical curriculum (and related student assessment) in Phase 1 and ensuring it aligns with the clinical curriculum of Phases 2 and 3 (Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics) and with the other Theme courses in Phase 1. It engages in ongoing revisions and promotes curriculum innovation, based on feedback from student assessments, program evaluation, and accreditation standards.
- This committee meets three times per year and all members are expected to attend these meetings. Every second year, an in-person retreat will replace one of the meetings.
- MCCs will meet individually with the Theme 5 Chair(s) annually to review their module’s content and assessments.
- Full details of this committee are outlined in its Terms of Reference.
