The Research and Scholarly Communications Librarian reports to the Director, Health Sciences Library and Data Stewardship. Participating in a team-based approach to the Library programs, this position provides a range of research and scholarly communications services within an academic health sciences library setting, including research consultations and knowledge synthesis searches. The Librarians work effectively in a collegial team environment, including sharing in Information Desk duties and contributing to the overall planning and delivery of library services.

This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Local 677 Unit 1 Collective Agreement. A copy is available on the NOSM University website. The appropriate Librarian rank shall be determined at the time of initial appointment and shall take into account the appointee’s qualifications, experience and achievements (Article 2.5.2).

Responsibilities

Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Provides support/guidance with information use, i.e. copyright, creative commons, Access Copyright provisions, open access licenses, etc.
  2. Delivers research and scholarly communications support services
  3. Oversees the faculty publications annual search and associated requests data
  4. Implementation of research data management support services
  5. Implementation of the institutional repository
  6. Develops tutorials/web-related materials to support research and scholarly communications
  7. Analyzes, evaluates and reports relevant statistics
  8. Assists with special projects as needed
  9. Participates in the Information Services Desk
  10. Serves as a member on various committees, as requested.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • A Masters’ level degree in Information Sciences (MLS/ MLIS/ MIST) from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Related experience in an academic or health sciences library is preferred.

• Knowledge of the scholarly communications landscape and emerging trends.

• Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian copyright law, creative commons, open access

licenses, and Access Copyright provisions.

• Familiarity with a wide array of electronic databases and platforms.

• Experience completing complex knowledge synthesis literature searches.

• Understanding of different research impact indicators.

• Knowledge of research data management principles.

• Understanding of institutional repositories.

• Demonstrated ability to foster an environment of collegiality, respect, trust, and teamwork.

• Provide excellent customer services to faculty, learners, staff and members of the public.

• Effective planning, organizational, and time management skills.

• The Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations that apply to the work being

performed.

• University administration policies and procedures is an asset.

• Identify with the Northern Ontario experience and/or issues common with rural

communities.

• Work evening and/or weekend hours when needed.

• Work in a consultative and collaborative fashion with a variety of other units to further

overall strategic objectives.

• Work within established organizational practices, protocols and policies.

Language

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
