NOSM Celebrates Milestone Achievement for First Royal College of Physician’s and Surgeon’s Residency Program
Posted on June 29, 2012On June 24, 2012, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) celebrated the completion of training of the School’s first Public Health and Preventive Medicine resident, Dr. Janet DeMille. DeMille, who will be working out of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, is also the first resident to complete a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon’s residency at NOSM.
“This really is a defining milestone for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. We’ve continued to have physicians successfully completing medical school, but this is our first resident completing a specialty residency program other than family medicine,” explained Dr. Roger Strasser, NOSM’s Dean. “This program is significant to NOSM as Public Health is an essential piece of the School’s social accountability mandate of contributing to improving the health of the people of Northern Ontario.”
Each year, NOSM admits two residents into the Public Health and Preventive Medicine program, which is a five-year specialty residency program. The NOSM Public Health and Preventive Medicine program is designed with ample flexibility to meet the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon’s requirements while allowing residents to tailor learning experiences and areas of focus to meet their career goals.
“Preventive Medicine is an essential part of delivering and enhancing health outcomes for communities across the North. It is with great pleasure to congratulate Dr. Janet DeMille on her accomplishments,” expressed Dr. Catherine Cervin, Associate Dean of Postgraduate Education at NOSM.
